Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure, the Ford family was managed by her grandmother, mom and godparents. While she was a small girl, she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time but Ford realized it was not the right venue for her. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He went on to get recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time she was already making her debut on television in the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
