Her acting career began in the year the year 2010 when she appeared in the British television show Just William, in which she was a student at the London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Her breakthrough came in 2015 when she was cast in the leading role in Cinderella which was a film about fantasy. She had previously played the role of Lady Rose MacClare as part of the period show Downton Abbey. James later played the role of Countess Natasha Rostova as part of the television adaption of War & Peace (2016). Also, she appeared in several films, including Baby Driver (2017) and The Dig -2021. We Go Back Again (2018) as well as Yesterday (2019). The role she played as Pamela Anderson for the biographical show Pam & Tommy in 2022 earned her Golden Globes and Primetime Emmy Awards.
