Audra is an artist who stands out with regard to the scope and variety of her talent as a performer and song writer. Audra McDonald, winner of the prestigious six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was listed as one of the Times magazine's 100 most influential people. The president Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -- America's highest honour for achievements in this field. Due to her beautiful tone, and unbeatable ability of telling compelling stories, she has found success in Broadway as well as at the opera and for television and film. Alongside her theatrical work she has a thriving career as a recording artist who performs regularly at most prestigious venues in the world. McDonald was raised in a musically inclined family in Fresno, California. She was a classical singer who received training from the Juilliard School of New York. One year after graduation McDonald was awarded the Tony Award Best Performance for the Lead Actress of a Musical for her performance in Carousel in the Lincoln Center Theater. After four more years of being in the Broadway premieres of Master Class by Terrence M. McNally (1996) and Ragtime (1998) in 1998, she won two additional Tony Awards. In 2004, she was in the running to win her 4th Tony Award. She was in the role of A Raisin in the Sun with Sean Diddy Combs. And in 2012, her fifth Tony as well as her first win award in the category Leading Actress was awarded to her for her portrayal as the title character in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. The actress made Broadway historical records in 2014 when she became the world's most decorated Tony Award performer. The role she played as Billie Holiday at Emerson's Bar & Grill in the show, which also served to launch her Olivier Award nominated debut on London's West End in 2017, was her six award. As the first actress to be given awards in four distinct category of acting, McDonald beat the record in the amount of awards an actor has received. The credits she has in the theater include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Her next role was that of a regular actor in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit and she starred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber. McDonald received her first Emmy for her performance as a character in the HBO remake of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit directed by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003, she was back on television, this time in Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., starring Josh Brolin. The Bedford Diaries on the WB in the early part of 2006 as well as Kidnapped, NBC. McDonald won a 4th Emmy for her role as Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill on HBO in the year 2016. The Bite is a drama featuring six episodes that are based on an epidemic, produced by Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. She appeared in the show with Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. McDonald has a brief appearance in the CBS Legal drama The Good Wife as U.S. attorneys Liz Lawrence and Liz Reddick between 2009 and 2018 reprised the role (now called Liz Reddick) in The Good Fight in the role of an Paramount+ season regular. McDonald received nominations to win three Critics Choice Award awards. The actress is currently appearing as a guest on Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which airs on HBO.
